“Tera Time Aayega”: Piyush Goyal’s Filmy Warning To Ticketless Travellers

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal channeled his inner “Gully Boy”, as he shared a warning to those travelling without ticket on trains. Titled “Tera Time Aayega” (your time will come), the song gives a funny twist to the catchy rap track “Apna Time Aayega” from the Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer.

The video is a montage of photos printed on railway tickets of people standing in line to buy them, and a “shaana” (street-smart) ticket collector — whose serious demeanour clearly shows no one can hoodwink him — checking the queue of passengers.

The song ends with the line “bina ticket aaya hai, tu pakda zaroor jaayega” (you’ve come without a ticket, so you will get caught for sure).

More Rain Forecast In Delhi Till Thursday, Air Quality Likely To Improve

Thunderstorm and wind could disrupt railway and airline operations in the coming days as western disturbances are expected to bring rain across New Delhi and its adjoining areas, according to the weather department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast mist and shallow fog for today, with the possibility of very light rainfall and thundershowers. The minimum temperature is expected to settle at 12 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature will be around 26 degrees Celsius.

Fairly widespread rain or snowfall will occur over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and scattered to fairly-widespread over Uttarakhand during the next four days, it said. Light to moderate rainfall is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, New Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh between February 18-21, the weather department added.

“Under the influence of western disturbances, strong winds and scattered rain can occur between February 18 and 21. This will have a positive influence on air quality. The air quality is expected to remain in the higher end of ‘moderate’ to the lower end of ‘poor’ till February 21,” the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) said.

Parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed light showers on Monday evening, resulting in a dip in temperature. The minimum temperature was recorded at 11.2 degrees Celsius. The air quality in the national capital was recorded in the “poor” category on Monday and is likely to improve in the coming days, authorities said.

Until now, New Delhi has received excess rainfall by 112 per cent. The national capital region witnessed an intense spell of hailstorm on February 7.

Tickets For Vande Bharat Express Sold Out For Next 10 Days, Says Railways

Tickets for the Vande Bharat Express, India’s fastest train, are sold out for the next 10 days, the railways said on Monday. The train will run five days a week, except on Mondays and Thursdays.

According to officials, the train is 121 per cent booked for Tuesday, 112 per cent for Wednesday, 109 per cent for Friday and 114 per cent for Saturday.

Similarly, from February 24 to March 3, Vande Bharat Express is booked 104 per cent on average.

The train had developed a snag on its return journey from Varanasi to Delhi on Saturday, hours after its inaugural run.

Sources said officials worked all day to fix the problem emanating from a charging cable malfunction which affected the train’s wheels and braking system.

How Glitch On Vande Bharat Express Triggered A Political War Of Tweets

NEW DELHI: Hours after Congress president Rahul Gandhi cited a technical glitch in the Vande Bharat Express during its first Varanasi-Delhi run to question the BJP’s Make In India initiative, Union Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter on Saturday to dub his remark as an attack on the “hard work and ingenuity” of Indian workers.

According to a clarification issued by the Indian Railways, the country’s fastest locomotive — also called Train 18 — was halted for over three hours early that morning because of a technical issue possibly caused due to an “external hit”. Soon after, Mr Gandhi turned up on social media to question the viability of the initiative. “Modiji, I think Make in India needs a serious rethink. Most people feel it has failed. I assure you that we in the Congress are thinking very deeply about how it will be done,” he tweeted.

Mr Goyal did not take long with his retort. “Such a shame that you choose to attack the hard work and ingenuity of Indian engineers, technicians and labourers. It is this mindset which needs a reset. ‘Make In India’ is a success and a part of crores of Indian lives. Your family had 6 decades to think, wasn’t that enough?” he asked in a tweet.

His party followed it up with an even caustic jibe. “Just because of one minor glitch you are asking for a rethink on an initiative as critical as ‘Make in India’. Do you realise how deeply India is rethinking about a consistent failure like you? P.S: Does your deep thinking involve outsourcing our manufacturing to Italy?” it tweeted from the @BJP4India handle.

During the first leg of its trip, the train ran from New Delhi to Varanasi in just eight hours — as compared to the 12-13 hours it takes for the Shatabdi Express to cover the same distance. Its speed was capped at 130 kmph in view of the condition of the tracks, despite topping 180 kmph in trial runs.

However, on its way back, the Vande Bharat Express was forced to a halt about 194 km from Delhi on Saturday morning. The train resumed its journey after repairs, reaching the national capital hours after schedule.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had flagged off the train on Friday. It will launch commercial operations from Sunday, running five days a week.

The Congress had earlier crossed swords with Mr Goyal over a video of the Vande Bharat Express zooming along the tracks, with the former claiming that the Union Minister had deliberately posted a sped-up clip to give the impression of faster speed.

Gujjars Call Off Quota Agitation After Assurance, Rajasthan Relieved

Gujjar protesters in Rajasthan ended their eight-day-old agitation today, after the state government gave a written assurance that it would take every legal step at its disposal to ensure that the community gets 5% reservation in jobs and educational institutes even if it gets stuck in court.

Although the Ashok Gehlot cabinet had passed a bill in this regard on Wednesday, community leaders said they would call off the agitation only after receiving more clarity on the matter. Today’s assurance, however, seems to have finally convinced them. According to reports reaching here, agitators have already vacated the Sawai Madhopur railway track – allowing train services between Delhi and Mumbai to resume.

Protesters led by Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla had also blocked the Jaipur-Bharatpur national highway, which is crucial for tourists travelling the golden triangle of Delhi, Agra and the Rajasthan capital. Now that the strike has been called off, bus services on the Jaipur-Kota, Jaipur-Agra and Jaipur-Bharatpur routes are expected to be restored by evening.

The state government had unanimously passed the Rajasthan Backward Classes (Amendment) Bill-2019 on Wednesday. The legislation provided Gujjars with 5% reservation in a special category because the government held that circumstances have changed ever since the centre gave 10% reservation to economically weaker sections recently and brought about a constitutional amendment for the same.

The bill sought to increase the backward classes’ reservation from 21% to 26% with 5% quota for the Gujjar, Banjara, Gadia Lohar, Raika and Gadaria communities. It said that the need for such a provision was justified because these five communities were the “most backward” in the state.

Soon after the agitation was called off, the Railways issued a notification stating that seven cancelled train services between Rajasthan and southern cities will resume with immediate effect. The Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani, which has been facing delays of nearly 10 hours due to diversions, will also start running on its usual route shortly.

Indian-Origin South Africans Moved By Tableau On Mahatma Gandhi’s Life

A group of Indian-origin South African nationals who attended the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi today were moved after seeing the Railway’s tableau themed on the transformation of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma.

Yashika Singh, who hails from KwaZulu-Natal Province, said the Pietermaritzburg train incident depicted in the tableau ”Mohan to Mahatma” touched “many emotional chords among us”.

In the tableau, a steam-engine train was depicted with the first carriage signifying the 1893 incident of Pietermaritzburg, when Mahatma Gandhi, a young barrister at the time, was thrown off a carriage after facing racism.

“I am a fourth-generation South African of Indian-origin, and I love my country, but we feel a sense of deep connection with India too. And, Gandhi and Mandela provide strong links. So, this tableau really moved us,” she told news agency PTI.

Yashika Singh, who lives in Estcourt and works in the media sector, said, a group of Indian-origin journalists have come from different parts of South Africa to cover President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State visit.

Asked if they were travelling with the president, Johannesburg-based Fakir Hassen said, “No, this has been done separately”.

Durban-based Salma Patel, another South African of Indian-origin who works for a radio channel, echoed Yashika’s sentiments.

“South Africa is our home. But, we feel a connection with India. And, we are very delighted to participate in the Republic Day of India,” she said.

On the top of the engine, a bust of Mahatma Gandhi has been installed, which is similar to the bust installed in June last year at the Pietermaritzburg station, according to information shared by the Defence Ministry on tableaux.

The second coach depicts Gandhi travelling in third-class compartment in Indian railways after return from South Africa.

Yashika recalled that last year marked 125 years of the Pietermaritzburg station incident and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had travelled to South Africa.

“The incident was retraced, and it had really left us emotionally very moved,” she said.

Asked, which part of India her ancestors had hailed from, she conjectures, “It is probably Bihar, as my mother says, the nature of food that we eat back home is similar to what people eat in Bihar but we do not know it as of now.”

Gandhi”s 150th birth anniversary was the overall theme of the Republic Day parade this year.

South African President Ramaphosa was the chief guest at the 90-minute celebrations marking the 70th Republic Day of India.

Railways Republic Day Tableau To Showcase Train 18, Bullet Train

After a gap of three years, the railways is all set to showcase its tableau in the Republic Day parade depicting the “transformation of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi” and highlight the yet-to-be-launched bullet train and Train 18, according to a statement from the ministry on Friday.

The tableau on the theme “Mohan se Mahatma” will depict the “transformation of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi” highlighting the incident in 1893, when the young Mohandas was thrown out of a “European only” compartment at Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa which acted as a catalyst for him to practice ”Satyagrah”.

“He later emerged as ”Mahatma” for this nation,” the statement said.

The front portion of tableau will showcase a steam engine on whose top is perched a bust of Mahatma Gandhi which is similar to the bust installed in June 2018 at the Pietermaritzburg railway station of South Africa.

The first coach of middle portion shows the young Gandhi being thrown out from the compartment in South Africa, the second coach of the middle portion depicts Gandhiji with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi, meeting people at railway station as Gandhiji travelled in third class compartment across the length and breadth of India by train after his return to India from South Africa in 1915.

In the rear portion of the tableau, Mahatma Gandhi is shown collecting donations for the ”Harijan Fund” during his train journey to Bengal, Assam and South India, carried out between November 1945 and January 1946.

The side panel showcases, how Indian Railways has spearheaded Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of swadeshi as shown in Indian Railways journey starting from the era of steam engines, to indigenously made and state-of-the-art ”Train-18”, an engineless train made under ‘Make in India” project of the Government of India.

Lalu Yadav, Wife Rabri Devi’s Bail Extended In Railways Hotel Case

A Delhi court has extended interim bail granted to RJD chief Lalu Prasad, his wife Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi in two Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) scam cases till January 28.

The cases relate to alleged irregularities in granting the operational contract of two IRCTC hotels to a private firm.

According to the charge sheet filed by CBI, between 2004 and 2014, BNR hotels in Puri and Ranchi were first transferred to IRCTC and later, for its operations, maintenance and upkeep, given on lease to Sujata Hotels Private Limited, which is based in Patna, Bihar. It is alleged that the tender process was rigged and the conditions were tweaked to help the private party – Sujata Hotels.

Based on the CBI case, ED also filed money laundering case against Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi, Tejashwi Yadav and others. Former Union minister Prem Chand Gupta, then managing director of IRCTC PK Goyal was also named as accused in the charge sheet.

The CBI registered a case in July 2017, and carried out searches at 12 locations in Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Gurgaon in connection with the case. The charges in the case include criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption, CBI had said.

Between 2010 and 2014, this land was further transferred, CBI alleged.

In 2001, it was decided to handover the management of catering services of the Indian Railways, including of its hotels, to the IRCTC. Two such hotels – BNR Hotels in Ranchi and Puri – were also identified and a memorandum of understanding was signed between the railways and the IRCTC on March 19, 2004.

According to an FIR filed by CBI, Lalu Prasad, the then railway minister, entered into criminal conspiracy with the owner of Sujata Hotels, Sarla Gupta, wife of his close associate Prem Chand Gupta, a Rashtriya Janata Dal lawmaker in Rajya Sabha, and IRCTC officials for “undue pecuniary advantage to himself and others”.

The CBI inquiry shows that the railways sought bids for developing, operating and maintaining Rail Ratna Hotels on September 16, 2006.

Railways Doubles Running Allowances Of Loco Pilots, Guards

The railways has decided to more than double the running allowance of its guards, loco pilots and assistant loco pilots, thereby accepting a long-pending demand of employees’ unions.

The move will increase its annual financial burden of allowances by Rs. 1,225 crore and enhance operating ratio by 2.5 per cent, a source said Thursday.

In November 2018, the national transporter had a record-high operating ratio of 117.05 per cent — which means it spent Rs. 117.05 to generate every Rs. 100 — which is an indicator of its financial health.

At present, loco drivers, assistant loco drivers and guards, who help in movement of a train and called the ”running staff”, get paid a running allowance of around Rs. 255 per 100 km, which is now being revised to about Rs. 520.

This will increase the annual financial burden of allowances from the present around Rs.1,150 crore to about Rs. 2,375 crore, the source said.

The revised rates will now be sent to the Finance Ministry for approval.

“The running staff had been demanding the increase for the past four years. While the allowances for other employees had been increased on July 1, 2017, their hike was pending. This is a new year gift from the railways to its staff. However, this will be a huge burden on railways as it will increase the operating ratio by around 2.5 per cent,” said the source.

The railways will also pay arrears of around Rs. 4,500 crore for the period from July 1, 2017 to December 2018.

The injured people were sleeping in the hall outside the ticket window at the station when the SUV — a Hyundai Creta– crashed past the barricades and ran over them. Some of them were taken out from under the car and rushed to a hospital.

“Seven people, out of whom three were women, have been admitted to the general hospital. A case has been registered under different sections against two people including the driver of the car,” a police officer told ANI.

There were five people inside the car, Dainik Jagran reported. The railway police nabbed two of them, whereas the rest managed to escape.
