3 Arrested In Less Than A Month After Mumbai Bridge Collapse Killed 6

Another Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official has been arrested by the Mumbai Police less than a month after the collapse of a foot-over-bridge near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station, taking the number of arrests so far to three. Six people were killed in the incident on March 15.

Anil Patel worked with the bridges department between September 2014 and December 2018. He will be produced before the court on Wednesday. He has been charged under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

On Monday, an assistant engineer was arrested. A court in Mumbai has sent the engineer, SF Kakulte, also working with the bridges department, to police custody till April 5.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Trimukhe told reporters that, “In the foot-over-bridge collapse case the Azad Maidan Police Station has arrested two BMC officials”. He said the investigation revealed that both of them were aware of their responsibilities and negligence on their part led to the collapse of the bridge. Further investigations were on.

Last month, the police arrested the structural auditor Neerajkumar Desai. His firm, DD Desai’s Associated Engineering Consultant and Analysts Pvt Ltd had declared the bridge safe for use despite some corrosion in the structure, police said.

Meanwhile, the foot-over-bridge at platform number 1 at CSMT station is now closed for passengers till April 26 for renovation and repairs of the landing area of the staircase.

The pedestrian bridge connects the railway station to the Azad Maidan police station and the Times of India building in south Mumbai. Thousands of commuters used to cross into the railway terminus through the foot overbridge every day. It is also referred to as “Kasab Bridge”, given that terrorist Ajmal Kasab was photographed on it on the day of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

After a portion of the bridge collapsed, it was demolished by authorities.

After “Main Bhi Chowkidar” Tea Cups, Railways Gets Notice From Poll Body

The Election Commission of India has served notice to the Ministry of Railways after social media users reported that tea was being served on a Shatabdi train in paper cups with PM Modi’s campaign line, “Main Bhi Chowkidar (I’m also watchman)”, printed on them, news agency ANI reported.

The poll body has asked the Railway Ministry to file a reply by today evening for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

After the photo of “Main Bhi Chowkidar”-taglined cups went viral on social media, the railways withdrew the glasses and penalised the contractor by imposing a fine of Rs. 1 lakh.

The railways also said that it was an “unintentional and inadvertent mistake”.

“Reports that tea has been served in cups labelled as “Main Bhi Chowkidar” have been investigated. This was without any prior approval of IRCTC. Explanation has been sought from supervisor/pantry in-charges over dereliction of duty,” an IRCTC(Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) spokesperson had told news agency PTI.

It was also claimed that tea was served in these cups twice. The advertisement on the cup was of an NGO called Sankalp Foundation.

The Election Commission Of India has also sent a notice to Ministry of Civil Aviation after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s picture was seen on boarding passes of Air India. The Civil Aviation Ministry too has been asked to file a reply by Saturday.

Recently, the railways withdrew tickets with photos of the Prime Minister after Trinamool complained the Election Commission about them.

Air India Found To Be Using Boarding Passes With PM Modi’s Photo Again

Air India Friday was again found to be using boarding passes carrying photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, days after the national carrier decided to roll back such passes amid criticism over alleged poll code violation.

On Friday evening, a passenger who took an Air India flight from Madurai tweeted a picture of his boarding pass having photos of PM Modi and Mr Rupani in an advertisement for the Vibrant Gujarat summit held in January.

“Air India had issued notice on March 25 to all domestic stations to discontinue usage of boarding cards with Vibrant Gujarat Advertisement on reverse with immediate effect. Today’s incident is apparently a human error. A show cause notice for this error has been issued to the airport manager of AI at Madurai,” an airline spokesman said.

“Today AI management has reiterated its earlier instructions and asked for confirmation from all stations regarding discontinuation of these boarding cards,” he said.

On Monday, a picture of Air India boarding pass – which had photos of PM Modi and Mr Rupani on it – was tweeted by a passenger, triggering a major controversy. Consequently, the national carrier issued a statement that it “has decided to roll back” these boarding passes.

On Wednesday, the Election Commission issued a show cause notice to the Railways and Civil Aviation ministries over the use of pictures of the Prime Minister on rail tickets and Air India boarding passes as prima facie it violated the model code of conduct.

On March 20, tickets with photos of the Prime Minister were withdrawn by the railways after the Trinamool raised the issue with the poll body.

The railways had said it was a third-party advertisement and leftover from a pack of tickets printed a year earlier was used. The national transporter also instructed its zones to withdraw the tickets.

Last month, the Civil Aviation Ministry “requested” airlines flying on domestic routes to give their passengers a letter written by Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu that enlisted various “achievements and initiatives” of the Modi government in the aviation sector.

IRCTC E-Ticket Cancellation: How To File A Ticket Deposit Receipt

IRCTC or Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, the ticketing arm of the Indian Railways, offers passengers the facility of filing a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) for cancellation of e-tickets. A TDR can be filed after the preparation of reservation charts, according to IRCTC’s website – irctc.co.in. TDR is meant for individuals who do not take up a journey on a booked ticket. Indian Railways has mentioned few directions for TDR filing, which determine whether a refund is to be processed in such cases. After online filing of TDR, IRCTC forwards the claim to the concerned department to process the refund. The refund amount is credited back to the account used to make payment for the booking, according to IRCTC.

Here are five things to know about IRCTC’s TDR filing facility:

1. TDR filing can be processed only if the customer was not able to perform the journey due to any /or the following reason: train canceled by Indian Railways, train running late by more than three hours and passenger not traveled, difference of fare in case proper coach not attached, AC failure, traveled without proper ID proof, wrongly charged by TTE and if party partially traveled, according to IRCTC.

2. No refund of fare is admissible on tickets having confirmed reservation in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train.

3. No refund of fare is given on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train, mentioned IRCTC on its website.

4. In case of a family e-ticket issued for travel of more than one passenger, where some passengers have confirmed reservation and others are on RAC or waiting list, full refund of fare, less clerk age, is admissible for confirmed passengers also subject to the condition that the ticket is cancelled online or online TDR is filed for all the passengers upto thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train, according to the e-ticketing website of Indian Railways.

5. After submitting TDR online, passengers can also track status of the refund case through tracking service provided by IRCTC.

“Over 40 People May Have Fallen When Mumbai Bridge Collapsed”: Eyewitness

The foot overbridge collapse on Thursday evening in Mumbai near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station, which killed six people and injured dozens, has yet again reminded Mumbaikars of the civic mess in an overcrowded city.

The bridge collapsed at around 7:30 pm and more than 40 people may have fallen from the bridge when it collapsed, eyewitness said.

Rajesh Yawalkar from Jalgaon recalled how he and other locals pulled out people from the rubble.

“The bridge collapsed in front of me with a strong thud. There were more than 20 people under the bridge when it collapsed. I could see a woman with a baby, and a few hawkers selling bananas under the bridge. A woman who worked at the GT Hospital was also under the bridge,” he said.

Two women killed in the Mumbai bridge collapse worked at the GT hospital where the injured people were taken. Some of the people injured in the incident were also taken to St George’s Hospital.

“Some people fell down from the bridge. After the collapse, chaos ensued,” he explained.

“A taxi was under the bridge and people got trapped,” he said, and added, “I along with other locals helped pull them out of the rubble and took at least 10 people to the ambulance.”

“There might have been some people who would have died at the spot,” he added.

This is third such tragedy in two years in Mumbai. A bridge collapse in Andheri last year in July left five people injured, while a stampede at a railway bridge at Elphinstone station bridge in 2017 killed 22 people and over 30 were seriously injured.

Nishant, another eyewitness, who works at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal, told NDTV that he was coming back from the office when the incident happened.

“Fortunately, I don’t take the bridge. As the bridge collapsed, I could see injured people being taken to the ambulance. Some locals were causing hindrance,” he said.

“CMST bridge is a packed in peak hours as is any other Mumbai bridge. There must have been at least 40-50 people who would have fallen,” he added.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured a speedy probe in the incident.

A first information report or FIR has been filed against officials concerned of the Central Railway and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation under section 304A (Causing death by negligence) of IPC at Azaad Maidan Police Station.

“Disappointed,” Say Twitter Users After Another Bridge Collapse In Mumbai

Six people were killed and at least 33 were injured when a foot overbridge near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai collapsed on Thursday evening.

One team from Regional Response Center (RRC), Mumbai, was rushed to the spot immediately, news agency ANI reported, quoting the National Disaster Response Force.

“Foot over bridge connecting CST platform 1 north end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed,” the Mumbai Police tweeted minutes after the collapse.

The injured people were taken to the St George’s Hospital and GT Hospital. Two women killed in the incident worked at the GT hospital.

The latest incident, which comes months after bridge collapse in Andheri, has yet again raised concern among the locals prompting them to question the authorities.

Reactions poured in on Twitter, as users shared pictures of the incident.

Some of them questioned the civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and Central Railways over poor infrastructure.

Minor Fire, Smoke Detected In Vande Bharat Express: Railway Officials

A minor fire broke out in the transformer of a coach of the Vande Bharat Express, sources said today, making it the latest in a series of incidents plaguing India’s fastest train.

No one was injured in the incident.

Even before its first commercial run on February 15, the train’s windows were damaged by stones thrown at it on more than one occasion during its trial runs.

During its first commercial run, it developed snags and broke down twice. On its third commercial run, stones were again thrown at Vande Bharat Express, formerly known as Train 18, breaking one of its window panes.

“A minor incident had occurred on board Vande Bharat Express yesterday. Smoke was reported,” a railway spokesperson said.

On Wednesday, during its return journey to New Delhi, a signal went off at 7:04 pm after the train reached Kanpur Central railway station.

A minor fire was detected in the transformer of C-7 coach, the temperature of which was found to be 90 degrees centigrade, sources said.

“After extinguishing the fire and isolating the transformer by the maintenance staff, the train was allowed to leave,” said a source.

The train was stranded at Kanpur station for around 25 minutes.

Barely ten minutes later, it stopped again at 7:39 pm at Govindpuri railway station after smoke was reported from the same coach.

“The maintenance staff again checked and found that the smoke was of the powder of the fire extinguisher that has been used to extinguish fire at Kanpur,” the source said.

The train left the station at 7:45 pm.

The semi-high speed train was flagged off from New Delhi Railway Station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, while commercial operations began on February 17

“Power supply to the third rail was immediately stopped and passengers were evacuated from the train. They were then escorted to the platform at Dumdum by the Metro railway officials,” she said.

Hundreds of inconvenienced passengers were seen waiting outside Metro stations during the rush hour, frantically trying to hop on a public transport to reach their destination.

“Truncated services were maintained between Girish Park and Kavi Subhash stations during the disruption,” Ms Banerjee stated, adding that normal operations resumed at 9.49am after necessary measures were taken by the Metro engineers.

Protesting Farmers Call Off Amritsar-Delhi Railway Blockade After 2 Days

Protesting farmers in Punjab who had blocked the Amritsar-Delhi rail track over the last two days called off their agitation today, police said, after the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The agitation led to the cancellation of 38 trains and diversion of 11 trains, officials said.

A petition seeking the removal of the farmers protesting on the Amritsar-Delhi rail track was filed in the court on Tuesday, with the HC issuing notices to Punjab, Centre and leaders of farmers’ outfit Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee to appear before it on Wednesday.

A senior official said the agitation was called off after leaders of the protesting farmers gave an assurance to the court in this regard.

Farmers under the banner of Kissan Mazdoor Sangrash Committee had been blocking the Amritsar-Delhi rail track in Amritsar in support of their demands, including a full loan waiver, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report, ending auction of land and arrest of farmers, and payment of sugarcane crop with 15 per cent interest.

Kissan Mazdoor Sangrash Committee president Satnam Singh Pannu alleged harassment and humiliation by banks and other financial institutions over farmers’ failure in repaying loans.

Pakistan Restores Samjhauta Express Services To Delhi

Pakistani authorities on Monday restored the Samjhauta Express services between Lahore and Delhi, days after the train was suspended due to tense bilateral ties.

The train departs on every Monday and Thursday from Lahore.

The Samjhauta Express carrying some 150 passengers left Lahore railway station for India, Radio Pakistan reported.

In New Delhi, Railways officials announced on Saturday that the two countries have agreed to operationalise services at their ends. India cancelled the operations of Samjhauta Express on February 28.

The train operates from Delhi on every Wednesday and Sunday.

Pakistani authorities suspended the train service on February 28 amidst tense bilateral ties in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack.

The footfall of Samjhauta Express, which generally records an occupancy of around 70 per cent, had fallen drastically post the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF soldiers were killed.

Tensions escalated between India and Pakistan in the wake of the Pulwama attack by Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed.

The Samjhauta Express, named after the Hindi word for “agreement”, comprises six sleeper coaches and an AC 3-tier coach.

The train service was started on July 22, 1976 under the Shimla Agreement that settled the 1971 war between the two nations.

On the Indian side, the train runs from Delhi to Attari and from Lahore to Wagah on the Pakistan side.
